Nirvana is the earliest and most common term used to describe the goal of the Buddhist path. The literal meaning is "blowing out" or "quenching" and It is the ultimate spiritual goal in Buddhism that marks the release from a persons rebirths in saṃsāra. Nirvana is part of the Third Truth on "cessation of dukkha" in the Four Noble Truths, and the summum bonum destination of the Noble Eightfold Path.
Within the Buddhist tradition, this term has commonly been interpreted as the extinction of the "three fires"; passion (raga), aversion (dvesha) and ignorance (moha or avidyā). When these fires are extinguished, release from the cycle of Samsara is attained.
Nirvana has also been deemed in Buddhism to be identical with anatta (non-self) and sunyata (emptiness) states.
